Trump Says He Will Speak To Putin Monday—After Russian President Skipped Peace Talks

Topline

President Donald Trump said Saturday he will soon speak to Russian President Vladimir Putin about a potential Russia-Ukraine ceasefire, just days after Putin snubbed peace talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as the warring nations continue fighting.

Key Facts

Trump said he will speak to Putin over the phone Monday morning at 10 a.m. EDT.

Trump added he will also talk to Zelenskyy and “VARIOUS MEMBERS OF NATO,” after his discussion with Putin.

The president said he hopes for a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia, after the two nations have been warring for years following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Putin did not attend peace talks alongside Zelenskyy that took place in Turkey this week, instead sending a delegation of low-level officials that did not reach a breakthrough with Ukrainian officials.

Trump’s talks with Putin and Zelenskyy will come after Russian drone strikes killed nine in Ukraine Friday, resulting in Zelenskyy pushing for stronger sanctions against Russia and scrutinizing the country’s peace talk delegation as “weak and unprepared.”
