See who Chris Solari of the Detroit Free Press believes will be in the mix to become the next Michigan State athletic director
Who is going to be the next athletic director at Michigan State? Chris Solari of the Detroit Free Press has some thoughts on that.
Solari released an article on Sunday morning that dove deep into the candidates he believes are in the running to be the next Michigan State athletic director. The list covered a wide cast of candidates — ranging from current North Carolina athletic direct Bubba Cunningham to former Spartans head coach Nick Saban.
Michigan State athletic director Alan Haller was let go earlier this week after serving in that role for nearly four years. His final day as the Spartans athletic director is May 11.
Here are some of the more notable candidates that Solari included in his list:
- Bubba Cunningham (North Carolina athletic director)
- Nick Saban (former college football head coach)
- Martin Jarmond (UCLA athletic director)
- Scott DeRue (CEO of The IRONMAN Group)
- Molly Fletcher (Agent that represents Tom Izzo and other prominent athletes and coaches)

My Thoughts of Solari’s List
I’ve heard Cunningham’s name come up now on multiple lists and chatter around the Spartans’ opening at athletic director. He would make a lot of sense for the role since he has proven he can thrive in that position at North Carolina and also has previously worked with Michigan State president Kevin Guskiewicz.
Jarmond from UCLA is another name to keep a close eye on. He’s been in the mix for the Spartans’ athletic director position the last two times the role was open and I wouldn’t be surprised if this is finally the time it happens.
Overall, this is a solid list of strong candidates that Michigan State should be considering. My anticipation is that one of these candidates included on Solari’s list will be the hire in the end.
